![]() pictured above, created a metaphor of a virtual store to showcase their products. The aisles lead you to second-level screens. Metaphors help your audience understand and remember concepts. When you choose graphics or symbols that your users already understand, you'll provide a familiar experience. This results in a truly intuitive interface. When you design using metaphors, use a word-image association game. For example, the word "publication" leads to images of books, newspapers, or newsletters. The word "tree" makes people think of branches, leaves, trunk, and roots. Your desktop computer uses metaphors with trash cans, in boxes, phones, and file folders. Another item to remember when designing metaphors is to test your images on a target audience to make sure your audience "gets" your message. free web site, Web Site Design. web design tool
Once you finish your flowchart, you can move on to design. Your design goal is to create a look and feel that permeates each screen. Consistency is important in all design but it's especially important with the Web. One mouse-click can take someone to a new site at any time so a consistent style provides a significant visual cue to let people know they are still at the same site. The illustration above shows the homepage -- or level one -- for Adobe's web site. Note how the red Adobe logo and company name are in the upper left-hand corner. Then note the two navigation bars at the top of the screen and the text-only navigation in the left column.
